Donald Trump’s proposal to forcibly remove Palestinians from Gaza and relocate them to parcels of land in Egypt and Jordan is not only reckless but a flagrant violation of international law. This isn’t diplomacy; it’s ethnic cleansing, an act recognised as a war crime under the Fourth Geneva Convention and the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Yet Trump—either through ignorance or sheer disregard for legal and ethical norms, seems to believe he can erase an entire population with the stroke of a pen. But people are not stones to be moved, and Palestine is not an expendable pawn in Trump’s political games. There is no room for neutrality. To remain silent in the face of this is to be complicit in a crime against humanity.
A Deliberate Violation of International Law
The forced transfer of a population is explicitly illegal under international law. Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention prohibits the mass displacement of people from their homes. The Rome Statute of the ICC defines the forcible transfer of populations as a crime against humanity. Trump’s proposal, which seeks to "empty Gaza" and permanently relocate its people elsewhere, fits squarely within these definitions.
This is not a bold new vision for peace; it is a blueprint for state-sanctioned ethnic cleansing that erases Palestinian sovereignty and identity. Worse still, Trump seems oblivious to the historical precedent this sets. The Nakba of 1948, when over 700,000 Palestinians were expelled from their homeland, remains an open wound. His plan threatens to create another catastrophe on a similar scale.
Even the United Nations, Amnesty International, and Human Rights Watch have warned that any forced displacement of Palestinians constitutes a grave breach of international law. Yet Trump and his allies push forward with impunity, emboldened by the lack of serious consequences for Israel’s ongoing violations of Palestinian rights.
To stand by and allow this to happen is not neutrality, it is active participation in ethnic cleansing.
Rejection by Egypt and Jordan: A Policy Dead on Arrival
Trump’s arrogance in proposing this plan without first consulting Egypt and Jordan has resulted in an outright rejection from both countries. Egyptian officials have unequivocally stated that they will not allow their land to be used as a dumping ground for Palestinian refugees. They know that such a move would not only be illegal but could destabilise their own security and sovereignty.
Similarly, Jordan’s King Abdullah II has dismissed the idea, recognising the demographic and political risks to his own nation. Jordan already hosts millions of Palestinian refugees from previous conflicts, and this latest proposal would only further threaten the country’s stability. Even those nations that have historically been pressured into normalising relations with Israel will not support this flagrant violation of Palestinian rights.
The Death of the Two-State Solution—Or the Final Nail in the Coffin?
Trump’s plan, whether intentionally or through sheer incompetence, buries any remaining hope for a two-state solution. The forced displacement of Palestinians from their land negates their right to self-determination, a right enshrined in international law and recognised by the United Nations.
For many, however, the two-state solution was already on life support. Decades of illegal Israeli settlements, military occupation, and the systematic destruction of Palestinian infrastructure have made the prospect of a viable Palestinian state increasingly unattainable. Trump’s proposal does not kill the two-state solution, it merely confirms what many have long suspected: Israel and its allies have no intention of allowing a Palestinian state to exist.
To pretend otherwise is to turn a blind eye to reality.
The Deafening Silence on Palestinian Voices
Perhaps the most damning aspect of this entire debacle is that no one has consulted the Palestinian people themselves. Trump, alongside his allies, is attempting to determine the fate of millions of people without even asking them what they want.
Palestinian leaders, activists, and civil society organisations have fiercely condemned this plan. Dr. Hanan Ashrawi, a longtime Palestinian diplomat and human rights advocate, recently stated:
"This is not just a land grab, but a total erasure of Palestinian sovereignty and identity."
The Palestinian people have been fighting on multiple fronts—politically, diplomatically, and through sheer survival—to retain their homeland. To suggest that they should simply be uprooted and moved elsewhere is an insult to their struggle and resistance.
The world must ask: why are Palestinians the only people on Earth who are told they must leave their homeland for others to have peace?
What Are the Real Solutions?
Instead of proposing war crimes as policy, genuine efforts towards peace must include:
Inclusive Negotiations – Any discussion about Palestine must include Palestinians themselves. Their voices and leadership must be central, not ignored.
Upholding International Law – Any solution must adhere to UN resolutions and human rights conventions, ensuring that Palestinians have the right to live in their homeland.
Ending Israeli Military Occupation – A peaceful resolution requires dismantling illegal Israeli settlements, ending the blockade on Gaza, and ensuring full Palestinian sovereignty.
Investing in Palestinian Infrastructure and Economic Development – Instead of displacing Palestinians, international efforts should focus on rebuilding Gaza, restoring basic human rights, and supporting Palestinian-led development.
A Palestinian-led initiative, supported by regional states and enforced by the international community, must work to dismantle Israeli occupation, ensure full sovereignty, and secure economic and political independence. Only then can Palestine become a self-sustaining, peaceful, and prosperous nation.
Trump’s Plan: A Colossal Failure in Every Way
Trump’s reckless proposal is not just impractical, it is a ticking time bomb that would ignite further instability, deepen suffering, and violate every principle of international law. The only possible outcome of such a move is mass displacement, resistance, and further bloodshed.
If Trump and his allies truly cared about peace, they would be working towards genuine reconciliation, not forced removal. But Trump, in his characteristic recklessness, is tossing matches onto a region already set ablaze.
There is no moral ambiguity here. This is not about choosing sides. It is about choosing humanity over genocide.
A Call to Action: Reject Ethnic Cleansing, Demand Justice
Palestine is not up for sale. Palestinians are not pieces to be moved.
The world must reject this genocidal proposal in its entirety.
But rejection alone is not enough. The international community must take immediate action:
Hold those responsible for war crimes accountable – Governments, international organisations, and legal institutions must act to prosecute those complicit in ethnic cleansing.
Support Palestinian sovereignty and self-determination – Recognise and support Palestinian statehood, ensuring their right to live in their homeland without external interference.
Demand an end to forced displacement as a tool of oppression – Governments and civil society must condemn and block any attempt to forcibly remove Palestinians from Gaza.
Pressure policymakers to act – Citizens worldwide must demand that their governments refuse to support Israel’s apartheid policies and push for diplomatic solutions grounded in justice.
Divest from Israeli apartheid – Economic pressure, including boycotts and sanctions, must be used to challenge the structures that enable ongoing violations of Palestinian rights.
The stakes could not be higher. Every act of silence, every diplomatic evasion, and every refusal to hold Israel and its allies accountable makes us complicit in ethnic cleansing.
There is no room for neutrality. This is a battle between justice and complicity, between humanity and genocide.
The world must choose. Which side will you stand on?
